About the producer
Ferdinando Principiano is a small family producer in Serralunga, one of Barolo's most prestigious communes, making wines that reflect the power and structure of this hillside.
About the year
2017 was a warm, ripe vintage in Piedmont that produced wines with generous fruit and softer edges than cooler years. This wine is drinking well now but will age gracefully for another decade.
Grape characteristics
Nebbiolo is one of Italy's greatest grapes, demanding and complex. It gives Barolo its signature rose petal perfume, high acidity, and tannins that feel almost dusty on the palate.
About the region
Serralunga sits on steep, south-facing slopes in the heart of Barolo country. The limestone and clay soils, combined with cool autumn nights, give these wines their intensity and ability to age.
Tasting profile
Expect aromas of red roses, cherry, tar and licorice, with flavours of sour cherry, plum and dried herbs. The wine feels substantial and demanding, with a long finish that lingers.
Serving suggestions
Serve at 16 to 18 degrees Celsius in a large burgundy glass. Decant for 30 minutes before serving to let it breathe and soften.
Also pairs well with
- • Beef braised in red wine
- • Wild mushroom risotto
